World Of Warcraft GM Power
I really enjoyed watching this clip, even though I’m not a big player of MMO Games such as World Of Warcraft. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to be, but can’t afford the monthly fees, and fear getting soooo addicted I would never get anything else done! This YouTube video shows the power of GMs in the game World Of Warcraft. GMs are Game Masters, who are Blizzard employees given free reign in the game to help out players, and keep an eye on proceedings.
The maker of the above video is given a go at being a GM and testing out what’s possible to do as one, and it makes intriguing watching. Some of the numbers and stats commands were beyond my understanding, but I did enjoy .killallatpc which as the name suggests kills all the other layers around you… nasty!

Unfortunately the GMs in game are too busy not helping you to actually actively mess up your game with the power they have. Although, I admit, quite often I wish I could kill people I was grouping with.

The Gms are useless then? I would sooooo love that power, to take out people who were pissing you off or just being a dick lol

The maker of this video is running a private server and in no way represents what the Blizzard Game Masters use to interact with the game or players on the live servers. Infact most of the time the GM’s are not even logged into the game server using a WoW client, but rather an elaborate database system with a fancy Instant Messaging client built into it designed to answer tickets in the queue.
A Blizzard GM would RARLEY enter the game world to interact with players. Mostly because it’s time consuming and they have a huge ticket load to deal with each day. They have other tools available to them for checking out your quests, your chat history etc.
The commands are also not real commands however the abilities they are linked to are all possible at some level of GM status.
Also the part about a GM having “free reign” is also not accurate as they are monitored VERY closly and any abuse of power (even for fun to test something out or help a friend) is cause for instant dismissal. Most of the time they are not able to create items or gold, this is reserved for the role of a “specialist” who never actually talks to the players directly.
Imagine a huge call center, with hundreds of people sitting at computers answering help desk calls every day. That is the life of a GM. It supprises me any of them play the game outside of their working hours.
In saying all this.. I enjoyed the video clip and it’s one of my favorites up with the Noggaholics video :)

To the above poster, it’s worth noting that GMs are capable of watching what’s going on, while invisibile and most likely non-corporeal, in a similar fashion to a spectator in a FPS like counter-strike. This is how they usually spot players botting.
They most likely do all their GM stuff from a GM client like the one shown, perhaps that very one, which is equipped with tools to answer tickets, look up info, watch anything at any time, and exist in the game as a player character should they so choose.
They have on numerous occasions screwed around with players, npcs, battlegrounds, and themselves (to my knowledge, only on the test realms). It would make sense that they do all of their interaction with the game through one client program capable of many many things.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Zellot is 100% correct about the blizzard GM’s Up until 3days ago I was a world of warcraft GM.
It is just your average call center job um will without the phones. GM’s sit in front of two monitors for 9 hours a day pulling tickets from a database.
The only GM’s you will ever see in game are the lvl2 and lvl3 gm’s. Also the lvl 1 GMs have no weapons, armor or bags also no fancy powers. They can not create items for player hell as a matter of fact a GM can not destroy a mob without getting permission first.
The only tool gm’s have are the database tools and the normal game client. GM’s are not allowed to enter the world unless told to by a supervisor. So they do not sit there and monitor players and for the most part 99% of their job is handled via the database client that has no real graphical interface. Just imagine looking at two grey screens all day long pulling 80 tickets a day
lol
