Six tips for making a great YouTube music video.

1. Don’t use the same scene for each chorus. While it makes sense lyrically, repeating the same scene for each chorus in the song does nothing for me visually. In fact, it gets rather annoying. Using similar scenes in action, color, or both is perfectly fine. People who pay attention will like your attention to detail. Using the same scene for each chorus could well be used as ‘the easy way’ to make a video.

2. Check your final product. When a video is up and it’s fuzzy, pixilated, or otherwise unpleasant to view, only a very, very good song is going to keep me in my seat until the end, and even then I won’t be watching your video, much less commenting on it or rating it well.

3. Create your own style. Well viewed doesn’t necessarily mean well made. Being successful on YouTube can gain you as well as your website a lot of attention. It is well worth it to hone your skills and your style so you stand out. It will make for better videos.

4. Make your introduction short, and use a sound effect rather than a song. A long introduction is just annoying, and you really need all of three seconds to introduce yourself and your video. Those three seconds would be more ‘stand out’ if you used a sound effect rather than a short song clip. You don’t want people wondering what the song was they just heard instead of watching your video.

5. Don’t end with a different song. I find this so incredibly annoying, especially when I like the song in the video but don’t care for the song playing during the credits. Credits are all fine and well, but try playing the song again at a lowered volume during the credits or even the instrumental version of the song.

6. Introduce your site at the end. Sites introduced at the beginning are soon and easily forgotten, while sites introduced at the end will be better remembered and even more often visited if it’s a good video. I have never once gone to a site listed at the beginning of the video, but I’ve visited plenty of websites owned by people who presented a great video.
