Happy Birthday, Peter Gabriel
OMG, it’s that’s time of year already! Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten Peter Gabriel’s birthday again. Wrong news reports in the 1980’s claimed that PG’s birthday was actually May 13 and that’s still in some celebrity b-day databases. I think PG personally started those rumors just so he’d get more presents.
What — you don’t know who Peter Gabriel is??? He’s the British singer-songwriter that was the original frontman for Genesis and then began a successful solo career in 1977, including Shock the Monkey, Sledgehammer and Solsbury Hill. For some reason, many of the songs titles beginning with “S” did very well. He’s also been one of the biggest influences in music videos and bringing world music to the attention of the West (although he’s not too fond of the label world music. “I’m not aware of any musical acts coming from Jupiter,” he once said.)
He’s also started two charities, Witness and The Elders, which both support human rights. His other babies include Real World Studios in Box, England and his four children Anne-Marie, Melanie, Issac and Luc.
If you haven’t figured out by now, PG is also the inspiration and the aspiration of my life. This was when I first became a fan, during the 1986 Conspiracy of Hope tour to benefit Amnsety International:
Two years later, Peter appeared on a very short-lived BBC interview program called Star Test (not to be confused with Star Trek during the publicity tour for what is arguably his greatest album, Passion:
And finally, here’s an interview from 2002 where Peter talks about his impending death:
Don’t worry, Peter. You’ll never die…because I won’t let you. BWA-HA-HA!
