Extraordinary Breastfeeding
This video is bizarre and slightly disturbing, as it tells the story of an English mother who still breastfeeds her daughter at 8… yes Eight years old. Now that is a bit strange, and makes me feel slightly nauseous. I was breastfed, not that I can remember but my mum informs me I was, and that’s fine, I think breastfeeding a baby is perfectly natural and normal. I don’t even shirk or look away when a new mother does it in public, and actually think it’s quite beautiful. But, that’s for babies, not 8 year olds who are at school, and have friends and lives of their own, isn’t that just a bit sick?!?
This was originally part of a British documentary called ‘Extraordinary Breastfeeding‘ in which some mothers justified their decision to carry on breastfeeding their children long after most people have stopped doing so.
The woman featured in this clip strikes me as a bit weird herself, and having a skewed vision of how to bring kids up, but having said that the children actually seem well rounded and behaved.
I’m sure I’ll get rounded on by people for this post, but I suspect it will be people who don’t like to see breastfeeding, and especially not having it featured on a YouTube blog, rather than anyone defending letting kids do it after the need has passed. My friend Randi, who passed the clip on to me got some heated comments when she first posted this, but I think YouTube Digger has a different readership than her blog ‘If you can’t say something nice… come sit by me!‘
Well, there’s only one way to find out, and that’s by using the old comment box down there to let me know your views, good or bad.

Wow. That’s about all I can say.
At first I didn’t think it was that bad, but then they said that they had names for the breasts and felt like they owned them. IMO that’s when you have a problem.

Oh come on now Kelley, we all name breasts once in a while don’t we? Hmmm, don’t we? We don’t? Just me then ;)

Thinking about what the mom said, about the girls deciding, and seeing that the child isn’t doing anything but getting some good tasting milk, I don’t find it a problem. I do think the child can feed out of the public eye but wouldn’t condemn them if they did it in public. They’re not being icky about it in any way.
I currently breast feed my 28 month old son and he shows no signs of stopping yet. The benefits do far outweigh going with any other kind of milk. Who ever said cow’s milk is necessary for humans is not correct. It’s for cows. Human milk is for humans.
Has anyone ever tasted human milk? It’s so good. Quite sweet in fact. I’m surprised someone hasn’t marketed it yet. *gasp* right? Don’t put something down until you try it.
In the end, the fact that it is the most perfect food in the world for humans for many years is a fact that can’t be countered with “it’s not appropriate to give after a certain time.” Studies continue to show that the health benefits are awesome for the child and they’re even finding it helps prevent some cancers in women. Double whammy!! heh
A little known fact about human milk, which happens to come from a breast: it is the only thing that will stay in the tummy when a child is ill. Yes, it actually stays in the tummy while everything else if barfed up. That alone is a great reason to continue for me. I’m lucky in having an extremely healthy child and don’t need to use it for that. HHHhhmmmm, wonder if my child is extremely healthy because he’s getting all that good stuff from mama’s milk????
