Dead Celebrities of 2008: Women
2008 saw the sun set on a lot of beloved celebrities and entertainers. For this post, we’ll just concentrate on some of the notable and influential women celebrities who have have taken their last bow. We’ll give space to the male dead celebrities in a future post. Granted, this post will be done with more of an American slant, (since it’s written by an American) so no offence is intended if a favorite deceased celebrity from your country is omitted.
I’ve narrowed the list down to three ladies, otherwise we’ll be crying into our drinks all year. I’m not spending the rest of my life doing this post (although I could think of worse fates).
That said, here we go. First up is Majel Barret, better known as the Widow Roddenberry, wife of the late, great Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek. She had two recurring roles in the original series (as Nurse Chapel and the voice of the Enterprise computer) but arguably shined best in her role as Lwaxana Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Next up is the irreplaceable Eartha Kitt, of Catwoman, pissing off JBJ and wearing-barely-any-clothes fame. I was tempted to put “Santa Baby” on here, but every other blogger is doing that, so I thought I’d go for something else. Here she is in a 1954 television appearance lip-syncing/singing “I Want to be Evil”:
Those two ladies died in December and are uppermost in my mind. But this lady, Eight Belles, died the first Saturday of May in the galloping greedfest known as the Kentucky Derby. Her death had the most affect on me and perhaps for her so-called “sport”:
