March Madness: Mad March Hares

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Have you ever heard of the expression “mad as a March hare”? And if you haven’t, why not? Well, trust me — there’s an expression that goes “mad as a March hare”. I heard it used a lot in England (although I’m not sure if it was referring to me.) No month of looking at madness would be complete without looking at March hares and why they have such a reputation for being completely bonkers.

Growing up in America, I’d assumed that hares were just large rabbits. Nope. There are quite a few differences.

Hares have longer legs, longer ears and nastier attitudes. Although rabbits have been successfully domesticated, hares are still wild and free. Rabbit babies are born naked and helpless, while hares hit the ground running (so to speak). There are various species of hares, including the jackrabbit of America, the European Hare (which look like small deer with big ears) that I got to know in England and the Arctic Hare in — well, in the Arctic.

Did I Just See What I Thought I Saw?

“Vision is controlled hallucination” — Max Clowes

Vision is a tricky sense. According to my home state, I’m legally blind, so maybe my vision is trickier than most other people’s. I have monocular vision, which means that it is technically impossible for me to see in three dimensions (or, at least, that’s what they tell me).

I do remember all of those terrible times trying to walk up and down stairs because I could not see where I should put my feet. I usually just gave up walking and scooted on my hands and knees. However, at my advanced age, I can tell through color and shadow where my feet should go.

Although we filter light and color through our eyes, it’s our brains that actually do the seeing. The images our retinas project to our brains are all upside-down, but out brains easily switch things around. And this is where the fun begins, especially if you are digging around YouTube.

Animated Dragons

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I’ve fugured out what the world needs more of — dragons. And I’m not talking about sports mascots or the lizard from the Komodo Islands, but real, honest-to-goodness dragons. Of course, there is that little bugaboo about dragons perhaps not being real creatures, but if we can make enough dragons through incredibly cool animated YouTube clips, then perhaps dragons will suddenly pop into existence. Heck, if billions of people can firmly believe in an invisible God, why not invisible dragons?

One of the great things about drawing or sculpting dragons is that you don’t have to worry about being anatomically accurate — because there’s no dragon anatomy textbooks to compare your final work to. So, in this way, any dragon you draw or animate looks like it could be a real dragon … if there were such things as real dragons.

Let the Dragon Parade of YouTube Clips begin. First up, a litle animation from ChinaOnTV.com. Thanks to “lamsike” for putting this up:

Next up is a very short stop-mtion film featuring a second generation Fischer-Price dragon. (Yes — I used to have one. I had a first generation, too, but sadly both perished when my home burnt down. I honestly don’t think the dragons had anything to do with it.) The embedding is diabled by request, so you need to click to see “The Dragon”.

Hello and welcome back. Ever wonder how to draw a dragon? Here’s a really quick lesson from “cgsbgs” which posted the steps to his dragon painting done in 27 minutes, but compressed down to three minutes in “Speed Painting of a Dragon”:

And, finally, we have what every animated dragon movie needs — dialogue from Father Ted Genius! And, uhh, not that much different from the original TV show:

Christmas Really Sucks

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

My brother and his family live in Canada, so I have to send their Christmas gifts ages in advance. Now, one of my neices has her birthday on December 29th, so the package also has to include a birthday gift. Thankfully, my brother got the package on time. However, there was one tiny problem — I forgot to buy a Christmas gift for my brother and his wife. I’ve got a feeling this one is going on my tombstone.

At least this is better than the Christmas a few years ago when I was homless in England and has the crap beaten out of me by my boyfriend.

Before that, I worked retail. I can honestly say that working retail during Christmas season was less painful than getting beat up by my boyfriend.

In honor of the occasion, I’ve written a new Christmas carol. Everybody join in and spread the love:
I hate Christmas
I hate Christmas
I hate Christmas
Christmas really sucks

The Last Ride

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Australians might not celebrate Halloween as widely as other places, but I thought I’d get into the Halloween spirit anyway and post up a twisted video.

Hitchhikers are a pretty classic part of horror story history for decades now, and this video plays one that element quite well.

When a woman, all alone except for her dog, pick up a hitchhiker, only bad things can happen when the dog is the only thing keeping the hitchhiker from touching her…

Then the dog falls asleep…

I have to say I saw the ending of this one coming for the most part. The dog (you’ll see what I mean) I didn’t expect, but otherwise… It’s still a good creepy short and quite enjoyable.

Another good aniboom channel video to go in the YouTube Digger archives.

Penis Enlargement Spam

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

We’ve all gotten those spam emails about how you can get your penis enlarged (why I, a female, should care about enlarging my penis, I don’t know) by buying these special pills or whatnot.

So what happens if you actually click the link…

Old Testament Minute

By Allison of Find Religion and Reality on Bravo

Sometimes, no matter how religious you may be, you just have to have a sense of humor!

And what can we learn from this video?

1) Religion isn’t something that has to eat up all of your time. Really, these are the basics of the OT, and he showed them to us in less than a minute.

2) When you simplify the stories of the Bible, they are pretty ridiculous. Instead of focusing on specific passages and in-depth studies, perhaps we should all spend a bit more time on actual faith and good deeds.

3) Teaching others about religion is important and again, it doesn’t have to eat up all of your time. Take ONE minute to talk to someone about your faith!

4) Anyone really can post absolutely anything on YouTube. :-p

5) I am Noah. I am awesome. Weeeeerd.

Tadeo Jones

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Tadeo Jones is a fearless explorer who, with his father’s journal, explores a pyramid.

This animated spoof of Indiana Jones is highly enjoyable as it is the “serious adventurer” type of short with a bit of humor mixed in. (Pay attention to where he puts his hands on the statue in the beginning.)

I’m a big fan of the Indiana Jones movies, so I appreciate the humor in this.

Enjoy!

Farm Wars

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

This 3D animation short has everything you could want - a peaceful farm setting, cute and adorable action, farm warfare…

This video made me smile and laugh when I saw it. I wish it could have gone on longer. I think you’ll enjoy it to.

Plus it’s one more reason not to trust those sneaky sheep…

Angst

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Since he was a baby, this man has been terrorized by the wind, making him develop a fear of it. However, when his dog is lost in a wind storm, he must face his fear and try to save his beloved dog.

I’ve always had a love for short films, and I like this one not only because the black and white colours and sketch animation work for this short, but because it has a lovely little message. Also the director doesn’t feel the need to beat you over the head with the message, which is nice.

Enjoy! (more…)

SNL Harry Potter

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

I think I’ve made it pretty clear on this blog that I love Saturday Night Live (especially ‘the good ol’ days’). I loved it even more when I saw this Harry Potter spoof.

Find out what happens when everyone is back from summer vacation and Hermione has…some new special powers.

The Lego Beer Song

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Reasons this is an awesome video:

1. It’s about beer and drinking.
2. There are Legos.
3. The music is March Of The Toreadors.

I used to play with Legos a lot when I was a kid, so when I find videos that incorporate Legos I like to check them out. Not only are they enjoyable on the whole, but take the time to realize they make these videos with stop animation and switch the heads so the mouths appear to be moving. There’s an immense amount of work involved.

Enjoy.

Rules of Writing

Monday, July 16th, 2007

The humor in this video lies in the fact it’s completely true. While the quality could be better and it could be expanded for more humor, it’s definitely worth a watch. I laughed at many of the rules because, as I said, they’re so true.

With the first rule, it’s no reason we’re getting more and more unhealthy…

Black Button

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

I’m always a fan of the ‘twist at the end’ kind of story. It’s one of the reasons I absolutely loved the movie “Saw. This short film is sort of like that, but on a simple scale which, in my opinion, gives it more impact.

I thought for sure I knew the twist at the end (with fudge room for some variation), but I was very pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong.

I hope you find this nicely done short film as entertaining as I did.

Can you figure out the twist before the end?

The Hauntening

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

If you haven’t already seen this video, you must see it. It is one minute and twenty seconds of good humor. (How could it be bad humor when we’re talking about beans and refrigerator magnets?)

I’m just glad I cook with noodles instead of beans.
