March Madness: Hypomania

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Earlier this month, YouTube Digger looked at mania. Now, we’re going to take a look at it’s more common and less severe younger sibling, hypomania (sometimes nicknamed “mania lite”).

Hypomania is a symptom of mental illness but it doesn’t mean that ther person is dangerous or needs to be committed to an asylum. Hypomania often happens to people suffering with bipolar disorder. However, hypomania can be really disruptive in a person’s life. Even though many people with hypomania report feeling euphoric, they still may not be able to make decisions, may not remember to keep commitmits and can really tick off family and friends. Many people with hypomania can manage their condition with medications and with practices like keeping a journal or entering therapy.

Crop Circles Are Pretty

Friday, February 20th, 2009

The argument over the origin of crop circles is still going on, despite many human artists coming forward and showing how they did it. Some simple crop circles do seem to be made by the wind. Many people firmly believe that crop circles are messages sent to us by aliens who pilot UFOs. The controversy continues on YouTube.

At this point, let Aunt Rena give you a friendly tip: crop circles are a serious subject in Southern England, especailly in the Western Counties like Somerset and Wiltshire were many of the crop circles appear. If you meet someone over there you happens to firmly believe that crop circle are the work of extra-terrestrials, do not argue. Trust me on this one.

But one thing is sure about crop circles: many of them sure are pretty.

Happy Imbolc — Here’s A Pentagram

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Paganism is not an organised religion by any means. For example, you get options as to what days a particular holiday falls on. In Paganism, there are (at least) eight holy days (nicknamed ’sabbats’) and today is one of them. Of course, you could’ve also celebrated it yesterday or the day before. I prefer today because I can combine it with Groundhog Day.

The Sabbat is called Imbolc — but that depends on which Pagan you talk to. It’s also known by other names like Imbolg, Oimelc, Bride’s Day or Candlemass. This is around the time that lambs are begin popping out of the ewes, which used to be a big deal in ancient times.

It’s MLK Day

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Just in case you didn’t aleady know, it’s Martin Luther King, Jr Day. Yes, that’s why the mail didn’t come today, so please stop calling the post office wondering if your local mail carrier is slacking on the job. Many schools and businesses have off, but not entirely to just kick back. Many people across America, including President-Elect Obama, have taken some time out of their day off to devote it to a day of service.

I went to a Christian school which had a lovely (white) history teacher who told us all about how not only that my Native American ancestors were going to burn in hell for devil worship, but that MLK did not deserve any of the respect he was getting because he cheated on his wife and we all know what the Bible says about that. Happy MLK Day, Mr. B! Hope you are having a miserable time!

Goodbye, Andrew Wyeth

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

America’s greatest living artist, Andrew Wyeth, has passed away in his sleep at the ripe old age of 91 and was reportedly still painting regularly. He proved that the saying, “Only the good die young” is fulla crap. He was especailly beloved in the Philadelphia area, because he was a native son. According to the regulars at Hank’s Place, the diner the Wyeths love, Andrew Wyeth often has pork and sauerkraut every week. Pork and sauerkraut! And he lived to 91!

I burst out into tears when Mom broke the news to me. I guess I cried because I was being selfish. I was hoping there’d be a lot more paintings yet to see or that maybe I could meet him one day — not that I would ever know what to say to him.

Animated Dragons

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I’ve fugured out what the world needs more of — dragons. And I’m not talking about sports mascots or the lizard from the Komodo Islands, but real, honest-to-goodness dragons. Of course, there is that little bugaboo about dragons perhaps not being real creatures, but if we can make enough dragons through incredibly cool animated YouTube clips, then perhaps dragons will suddenly pop into existence. Heck, if billions of people can firmly believe in an invisible God, why not invisible dragons?

One of the great things about drawing or sculpting dragons is that you don’t have to worry about being anatomically accurate — because there’s no dragon anatomy textbooks to compare your final work to. So, in this way, any dragon you draw or animate looks like it could be a real dragon … if there were such things as real dragons.

Let the Dragon Parade of YouTube Clips begin. First up, a litle animation from ChinaOnTV.com. Thanks to “lamsike” for putting this up:

Next up is a very short stop-mtion film featuring a second generation Fischer-Price dragon. (Yes — I used to have one. I had a first generation, too, but sadly both perished when my home burnt down. I honestly don’t think the dragons had anything to do with it.) The embedding is diabled by request, so you need to click to see “The Dragon”.

Hello and welcome back. Ever wonder how to draw a dragon? Here’s a really quick lesson from “cgsbgs” which posted the steps to his dragon painting done in 27 minutes, but compressed down to three minutes in “Speed Painting of a Dragon”:

And, finally, we have what every animated dragon movie needs — dialogue from Father Ted Genius! And, uhh, not that much different from the original TV show:

Simpsons Anime

Friday, October 26th, 2007

I don’t know about you, but I’m a big fan of anime. I don’t have the resources to watch as much as I’d like, but I do like watching what I can.

The video titles are pretty self explanatory – the Simpsons have been drawn in human anime style.

Part One

Part Two

I think the drawings are great. I don’t like how some of them look – like Homer and Maggie – but I think Marge, Lisa, and Bart look awesome. Smithers looks a bit odd, but funny.

As for Krusty, it could be my dislike of clowns coming through, but he looks just plain creepy.

These all look like they’re from a poster of some sort, so if anyone knows where that can be found, please let me know. I would love to check out the whole thing.

Shadow Art Show Video

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By Dave Parrack
Brit Music Scene

The first time I watched this YouTube video of a human shadow puppet show, I thought there must be some camera trickery involved, it’s that impressive. It’s all real though, and performed by a dance company called ‘Pilobulus‘.

We can all do those small shadow puppets with our hands against the wall, making a simple shape like a bird, but this is something a whole lot better, and harder to choreograph.

The first shape made is of a tall man, and it’s incredible how perfect it looks, with no weird deviations at the edge of the form. I suspect it took quite a few takes to pull this one off.

Next comes a bunch of fat penguins, and if it wasn’t good enough to just take the form, they make them waddle along too. I enjoyed watching this more than ‘The March of the Penguins’.

And then it just gets stupidly complicated as the group of body puppeteers make a silhouette of a van with passengers, complete with a guy running after it in a cartoon fashion. How do they do it?

Lastly, the group turn in to a gun… once which shoots! The whole clip is astonishing, and come sun down tonight, I’ll be practising my skills in front of the light. I fear for my neighbours.

Hope you like it,

DaveP

Three Year Me

Monday, July 9th, 2007

What first came to mind when I watched this video is: Wouldn’t it piss you off to have taken a picture of yourself every day for three years to only end up with a video that’s only a little over a minute long?

I admire the dedication, but I think this would be more effective if the person was losing a large amount of weight over a period of time or something like that. This is akin to watching someone who has put together hundreds of pictures of his/her face. Period.

Still, it’s somewhat interesting to watch. One time, anyway. If you pay close attention, you can pick up the small changes that happen.

New YouTube Digger Banner And Things!

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Look, up there, yes, above you, see what that is? It’s a spunky new banner for YouTube Digger, and it’s a work of genius!

The 451 Press network has finally relented and let us design and post our own banners for our blogs. I’m sure you’ll agree it makes a welcome addition to the blog, and makes your friendly YouTube video blogger stand out from the crowd a wee bit. Ok, so I’m not exactly beating the YouTube blog for traffic quite yet, but I’m getting there slowly.

Big Yellow - Tide Advert

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Most TV advertising is rubbish these days, so that’s why when a great one comes along, I like to spread the love for it on here. This latest ad for The Big Yellow Storage Company is one such class act, and is directed by Dougal Wilson.

Bruce Lee high speed art

Add to My Profile | More Videos

This is obviously from MySpace rather than YouTube, just for a change. It shows a guy who calls himself Phil in the circle painting Bruce Lee on a massive canvas in a rather unusual way. While I think the end result isn’t the best portrait I’ve seen of the great man and master martial artist, it’s done in such a unique and clever way, with the guy using a series of chops and karate moves to create the work of art, it’s well worth drawing attention to and posting on YouTube Digger.

John Locke From Lost - Speed Painting

Monday, March 5th, 2007

This is not only a great video but also a brilliant piece of artwork. Done using Photoshop, this portrait of John Locke from the TV Series and mega hit ‘Lost’. Terry O’Quinn plays the former disabled guy and now hunter gatherer character, and is probably my favourite from the show, currently on it’s third series. (more…)

This is pure class! I love this version of Star Wars which is done entirely with hands. It’s very clever, and is probably more enjoyable than sitting through ‘The Phantom Menace’! (more…)

Influences

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

This is a great video short of a guy painting on his body. He chose 30 people who have influenced him in his life and painted them or an object that represents them. He’s got a website where you can see the work and some brief details of each picture at Phil In The Circle. (more…)
