Battlestar Galactica

Monday, July 30th, 2007

I’ll admit it - I’ve never watched Battlestar Galactica. But after watching what they do for fun (in the original, at least) I want to check out the show, both new and old.

As per request, here is some Battlestar Galactica goodness for the masses. If you start wondering where the spoof is in the beginning (like I did) just keep watching.

For other Battlestar Galactica goodness, check out Watching BSG. Also, check in for more BSG goodness this week.

Win a World Trip

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Want to travel the world and experience some of the most original nightlife on the planet?

And have someone else pick up the bill?

Smirnoff is offering the opportunity of a lifetime: ten people will spend a year traveling the world searching for the best original nightlife.

You will travel and live together for a full twelve months as part of The Smirnoff Ten. You’ll get to attend all four of this year’s Smirnoff Experience events, starting in Moscow in September and continuing in Shanghai, Paris and New York. You’ll also visit the world’s most exciting cities, events, parties, festivals, bars and clubs across Asia, Europe, South Africa, Australia and both North and South America.

What kind of people are they looking for?

As a member of The Smirnoff Ten you’ll make and star in short films documenting your travels, the people you meet and the original nightlife you discover. You’ll also write articles and take pictures for publications and websites around the world. So we’re looking for people who:
- know about nightlife (mixology, music, gigs, clubs, DJs, blagging)
- are good in front of a camera
- can make great films / write well about their experiences/ take amazing photos etc.

They are specifically looking for people who can speak good English and are from one of the following countries: Canada, Great Britain, Japan, South Africa, or USA. If you have filmmaking experience and editing skills that will give you an advantage, but not everyone in the Ten needs them, so you’re still in with a chance if your skills are more as a writer or photographer.

How do you enter?

STEP 1: Visit http://www.smirnoff.com, click on the Smirnoff Experience button and you’ll get more info and the full application details.

STEP 2: Make a short film. This should be a film about you and about the original nightlife where you live. It should demonstrate why you have the credentials to be one of The Smirnoff Ten reporting on the best original nightlife around the world. Your film should be no more than 2 minutes in length. When you’re ready, return here to upload your video to this contest page and make a note of the URL of your audition video. If you’re not already registered with YouTube, you’ll have to do that first in order to upload your video.

STEP 3: Go back to http://www.smirnoff.com and complete the application form in full it includes a space for your YouTube user name and the URL for your application video — this enables them to link your video to all the details you’ve entered on the application form.

They’ll then shortlist the entries, and get in touch with successful applicants about the next step. You will have to be available to start the adventure in September of this year.

Smirnoff wants you to remember the experience - so please always drink responsibly.

I’m a Bitch Spoof

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Pretty much all of us have heard Weird Al’s songs and know him for taking one song and turning it into something completely different and often hilarious.

I bet you haven’t heard of Chris Franklin, though.

This Aussie bloke from a city not far from where I live, actually, took Meredith Brooks/Alanis Morissette’s (depending on where you’re from) song Bitch and came back with the song Bloke.

If you know Aussie humor, you have an idea of what you’re in for with this video. If you don’t, sit back and enjoy. This is a video definitely worth watching. Imagine my surprise when I heard this in the pub for the first time as you listen to the lyrics.

Hard at Work

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Whether you’re in the States or elsewhere, you’ve probably seen The Office. If you haven’t, it’s a show that’s more of an office documentary turned sitcom than anything else.

I’m not quite sure where the appeal in The Office and Hard at Work lies. There’s the basic humor, but more than anything, you simply get to play the role of voyeur that you get with any documentary. Call it a perverse documentary of sorts.

While some of the character personalities are overdone in Hard at Work, I was born a critic and am being overly harsh on videos that are worth a watch. To sit back and be grateful you don’t work in that kind of place (if you don’t).

Here are episodes one through three of Hard at Work.

*Note: I post some videos under the more tag so the initial page loads faster.

The Lego Beer Song

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Reasons this is an awesome video:

1. It’s about beer and drinking.
2. There are Legos.
3. The music is March Of The Toreadors.

I used to play with Legos a lot when I was a kid, so when I find videos that incorporate Legos I like to check them out. Not only are they enjoyable on the whole, but take the time to realize they make these videos with stop animation and switch the heads so the mouths appear to be moving. There’s an immense amount of work involved.

Enjoy.

Soft Shoe

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

As I’ve said before, one of my most favorite things about Australian television is the amount of sex – be it straightforward, implied, or innuendo – is used in advertising. It’s a mark of a country that accepts sex for what it is and doesn’t have hang-ups over it.

I think you’ll find this commercial – the very first commercial I saw over here that made my jaw drop – quite funny. I’ll caution you if you have a fear of spiders. Or maybe I should encourage you instead…

Cats!

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

cat-in-pringles.jpgNo, I’m not talking about the musical.

You’ve probably seen them on your internet travels, pictures with or without captions of cats. Usually they are accompanied by a caption with some sort of net speak or reference to cookies.

Anyway, in this video, the creator has compiled dozens of these cat pictures (all with captions) into one video. While they’re not all the best of the cat captions (I’ve seen some of the pictures with better, funnier captions) it’s definitely worth at least one watch. I got many smiles, chuckles, and a few hardy laughs out of it.

Enjoy.

Britain’s Got Talent - Paul Potts

Friday, July 20th, 2007

I’m a little late on finding this video, but even for those who did watch this, it’s worth watching again.

One of the main things I don’t like about people is when they judge someone before knowing them. I know it sounds goody-goody, but it’s the truth. You can see it in the faces of these judges when Paul announces to them he’s going to sing opera.

To them, I say, “Take that, judges!?

Watch here to see something amazing come from a man people might usually pass by without a glance.

Hotel California Live

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

I actually have the DVD of The Eagles singing this live, and I love it so much I decided to look it up to post here.

I’m very glad for my upbringing in that I was exposed to what I consider classic songs like this. I’ll be posting up my favorite songs every now and then, so I hope you don’t mind.

Ebay by Weird Al Yankovic

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

I’m definitely a fan of Weird Al. He hasn’t always made me laugh, but when he does, I laugh a lot.

I love this video not only because he’s making fun of a Backstreet Boy’s song but because I know this is probably true of a lot of people. There is a lot of crap floating around in eBay and people are actually buying it.

Watch this and see if you laugh or blush and close your eBay open in the other window of your browser. ;)

Sex and Soup

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

For those of you who don’t know, I’m Australian, formerly American. One of the very first things I noticed coming to Oz was the freedom Aussie advertisers have with commercials. Not only do people swear on television (not something you’d see often at all in the States, for you non-Americans), but there are often references to sex of all kinky kinds.

This isn’t the first one I saw (I’ll post that up in the future), but it is definitely one of my favorites. You only have to watch to see why.

Enjoy.

Rules of Writing

Monday, July 16th, 2007

The humor in this video lies in the fact it’s completely true. While the quality could be better and it could be expanded for more humor, it’s definitely worth a watch. I laughed at many of the rules because, as I said, they’re so true.

With the first rule, it’s no reason we’re getting more and more unhealthy…

Ultimate Canon Rock

Friday, July 13th, 2007

I heart this Canon Rock video.

What is Canon Rock? It’s the classical Canon taken to a new level by being played usually on an electric guitar or keyboard and given a rock feel by adding a bit here and there with drums, etc.

This ultimate Canon Rock video is the creation of forty different people’s Canon Rock videos being cut and sliced and put together for a ultra-YouTube-concert of sorts.

You have to appreciate the amount of work this guy did to not only get bits and pieces from forty videos, but to get the parts to line up with the music.

Awesomeness. Enjoy. (more…)
